About Shift & Save®
Shift & Save® is a unique program that permanently reduces the peak demand of the electric grid by incentivizing the installation and usage of Permanent Peak Load Shifting (PLS) technologies, specifically, chilled water or ice storage1. Unlike Demand Response, which reduces the peak load on specific days when the power grid is at risk of overload, PLS technologies permanently removes daily AC peak loads over the entire peak season. Designed to ensure continued power reliability, participation in Shift & Save® offers a viable means to contribute to a more sustainable way of doing business.

There is a limited budget for customer incentives and the program ends in December 2011. Customer reaction to Shift & Save® has been very positive. Using PLS technologies, Shift & Save® allows qualified PG&E customers to install equipment that uses less expensive, less polluting, nighttime power to create and store cooling for use the next day. Administered by Cypress, Ltd. the Shift & Save® market qualifications include:
- All bundled PG&E customers with service sizes typically suitable for A6, A10 TOU, E19 or E20 rates
- Community college districts, cities and counties
- Commercial, institutional, retail and military applications
- Retrofit, new construction, remodel or gut/rehab, and tenant finish applications
- AC provided by DX refrigerant condensing and compressing
- Permanently shifts demands of air conditioning units from summer on-peak hours during the 2007 - 2011 program years
- Promotes PLS technology and strategies in retrofit, new construction, gut/rehab applications
- Eliminates peak load and lowers customer costs for peak energy
- Helps lower a building's carbon/greenhouse gas footprint by 10 to 20%
- Reduces California's electricity peak demand
- Helps improve electricity grid reliability
- Helps improve comfort and increase AC equipment life
- Supports a "Key Action" in California's Energy Action Plan II to tap advanced technologies to achieve the goals of reliability, affordability and an environmentally-sound energy future
